New Ukrainian School

The concept of the New Ukrainian School (NUS) accumulated modern education ideas and approaches. In September 2017, a new law “On Education” was passed. Since September 2018, primary students across Ukraine have been joining the school system following new approaches.

September 2017 – law “On Education” adopted
September 2018 – learning and teaching according to new standards

The EdCamp Ukraine team was actively involved in drafting the concept and standards of NUS, as well as the new professional standards for teachers, thanks to cooperation of the Ministry of Education with its advisers, Oleksandr Elkin and Olena Masalitina (2016–2020).

NUS

New Ukrainian School
What is NUS?

NUS is a profound reform of the school system from the 1st through 12th grades.

What is its major principle?

Being child-centered.

Our community of responsible teachers is built upon the same humanistic foundation.

Teach and Learn

In 2018, we conducted research together with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine titled “Teach and Learn: Professional Development of Ukrainian Teachers”, having polled 8,427 educators from across Ukraine about their jobs, professional development, needs, dreams, and plans.

New opportunities

The research findings and “The Declaration of Efficient Professional Development in Pedagogy” signed by leading educational NGOs and other agencies from the sector fueled institutional changes in educators’ professional development.

The Ministry of Education and Science with expert participation of EdCamp Ukraine drafted clear guidelines for school that illustrate how teachers could use new opportunities. To institutionalize this process and make it sustainable, the Ministry created a designated workgroup on teacher professional development that has been patronizing the implementation and development of the changes (under Decree of the Ministry of Education and Science No. 223 dated Feb. 17, 2020), whose members are mostly educators from our community

My Educational Start-Up

My educational start-up is an intensive, practice-oriented course, a learning sprint, a so called 2 in 1:

  • on the one hand, participants go through professional development (PD) in an appropriate program and are awarded a PD certificate;
  • on the other hand, as a result they create and design their own training program and offer it to colleagues on the EdWay platform on a peer-to-peer principle starting September 1, 2021.
img

Why learning sprint?

  • Scheduled systemic training.
  • Professional guidance and supervision by best experts.
  • Successful completion of several learning modules – short sections or “distances” that are crucial for achieving the goal.

This course presents new opportunities

This course is a unique opportunity to present your professional development offer in any area on the national level in Ukraine based on transparency, openness, and meeting educators’ needs.

Kids and Docs

In 2017, we initiated a research project titled “Kids and Docs” to find out how much paperwork must be filed by teachers and school administrators, as well as to find ways to reduce it. Now, as instructed by the Ministry of Education and Science, workplans and lesson plans are no longer obligatory, and course schedules can now be drafted in an arbitrary form. Obsolete requirements for filing documents have also been cancelled by the new regulation. Another significant outcome of the Kids and Docs research was abolishing the obsolete practice of keeping track of children within districts. Starting with mid-2021, the Ministry of Digital Transformation has been taking into account the data and recommendations from this report in developing the digitalizing of school documents.

22%
Together with the Ministry of Education and Science, we managed to reduce the volume of paperwork for educators by 22 percent and cancel some requirements imposed on schools by various agencies.

#nondiscrimination

Launched in 2016, the antidiscrimination expertise of school textbook drafts continues. Since then, 89 persons have been certified in nondiscrimination approach in education — they now examine textbooks for the signs of discrimination. Experts provide authors of textbooks with recommendations on how to change or eliminate the discriminative content and how to avoid it in the future.

What discrimination can you find in school textbooks?

Most often it is indirect or covert discrimination against women, elderly people or children, stereotypes about those who live in villages and cities, about nations’ mentality, etc.

What Have we Done?

Conducted 13 trainings

for textbook authors.

Reached 64% of Ukrainian publishing houses

that publish school textbooks.

What Results Have we Achieved?

2016

86% of examined publications involved bias or discrimination.

2020

There are many more ideas and tasks than one lesson can cover!

School lesson devoted to
the 30th anniversary of independence

Wow-site 30ua was created by a group of Ukrainian creative companies.

Then EdCamp Ukraine and its creative partners created a lesson toolkit to help educators hold the 30th first lesson in independent country in Ukrainian schools to strengthen children’s and adolescents’ pride in their country.

Not only did our team wish to tell the world about the achievements of Ukrainian athletes, artists, and designers, and to draw attention to the places worth visiting with your family, but it also strived to allow students to speak the truth – Ukraine is currently at war, defending its borders.

Educators also have an opportunity to share ideas on improving the content with site developers.

Guide "Lessons of Kindness: Ideas and Tips for the School Year"

This handbook is a universal guide to the world of charity, leading you through all stages of understanding and becoming aware of good deeds. The central idea that permeates each page is: “The main thing is for you to feel happy when you help because charity means exchanging good!”

It is recommended for reading to all participants of the educational process, because the guide contains not only useful ideas and tips, but also strategies for forming a culture of charity in education.

We believe that if good deeds are done in focused, small steps and broken into manageable parts, while maintaining a systematic approach, we can raise a generation of children for whom helping others is as natural as breathing, and for whom charity and good deeds are ordinary actions that bring joy.
